Messages
Signed-in members use Messages for private one-to-one conversations with other members.
Use Messages for any private discussion—including project-related talk with a coordinator or teammate. Public project discussion stays on the Forum or the project page.
There is no separate “project chat room.” To discuss a project privately, message the person directly.
Open Messages#
- Open Messages from your account menu (or the site footer when signed in).
- Direct link: Messages
- Use the Inbox tab to open a conversation, or Compose / New message to start one.
You may also see a Notifications tab that opens your alerts inbox.
Start a conversation#
From Messages (Compose)#
- Open Messages → Compose (or click New message).
- In Recipient, start typing a member’s name and choose them from the list.
- Write your message in the box (placeholder: Write a private message…).
- Click Send.
You can also open compose with Messages → Compose.
From a member’s profile#
- Find the person in the Member directory or open their profile from a project, forum, or search.
- Click Message or Send private message (under Contact when shown).
- Write your message and Send.
If you already have a thread with that person, you go straight to the existing conversation.
From the Forum#
On a forum post, click Message next to the author (when you are signed in and it is not your own post). That opens Messages with that member as the recipient.
Reply in a thread#
- Open Messages → choose a conversation in Inbox.
- Read the thread.
- Type in Write a reply… and click Send.
Project-related messages#
When you need to talk about a project privately:
- Open the other member’s profile (or Compose and find their name).
- Send a clear message that names the project and what you need.
- Keep the conversation respectful and on topic (Code of Conduct).
For questions everyone should see, prefer the Forum or the project’s public pages instead of a private message.
Report abusive or harmful messages#
All messages must follow the Code of Conduct. Harassment, bullying, spam, hate speech, abuse, or other policy violations are not allowed. Reports are reviewed, and disciplinary action may follow when the Code of Conduct is broken.
Report a message in the conversation#
- Open the conversation in Messages.
- On the incoming message, click Report.
- Choose a Reason (required), for example:
- Harassment or bullying
- Spam or scam
- Hate speech or abuse
- Inappropriate content
- Other policy violation
- Add Details (optional) if it helps.
- Click Submit report.
After you report:
- You should see confirmation that the report was submitted.
- The other member typically cannot message you while the report is under review.
- You can track status labels such as Open, Reviewing, Resolved, or Dismissed on your report(s).
Support mediation#
In some cases a Support mediation conversation may appear so you, the other member, and support can talk in one thread. Follow the banner instructions on that chat.
Broader concerns#
If the problem is not a single message, or you need help outside Messages, open a support ticket or use Contact.
Safety tips#
- Keep messages related to platform work and mutual respect.
- Do not share passwords, one-time codes, or payment details in chat.
- Use Support tickets for account or technical problems with the support team—not private Messages to random members.
If you cannot send#
Some roles can only read the inbox. If you see that you are not allowed to send new private messages, contact Support. Partner or site rules may also limit who can receive messages from you.
